misjudgment of Moscow's intentions. Yet, this framing conveniently sidesteps Washington's own extensive history of engagement with and support for various states, including those with questionable human rights records, when geopolitical interests align. The notion that the US 'trusts' Putin enough to overlook strategic realignments between Russia and Iran, particularly when US sanctions have
pushed these nations closer, is a narrative as thin as it is self-serving. The real double standard here is the selective outrage. For years, the United States maintained covert ties with Iran even after the 1979 revolution, notoriously engaging in the Iran-Contra Affair in 1985, supplying arms to Tehran against an arms embargo. This historical precedent is never mentioned when discussing
contemporary alliances. The US-Israel joint military operations against Iran, often presented as defensive maneuvers, directly involve the US as a direct participant and joint aggressor, not merely a supporter. While The Independent speculates on Russian support for Iran, it ignores the immediate, on-the-ground reality of US military assets, including carrier groups and B-52s, positioned to strike
