While the NYT reports a funding relief for vital WIC food aid, it conspicuously omits the broader congressional ledger. Just recently, members of Congress, including Rep. Steny Hoyer, who has received over $100,000 from AIPAC-affiliated PACs since 2018 (OpenSecrets.org), voted overwhelmingly for HR 815, providing $14 billion in aid to Israel in February 2024. This aid package, supporting a
military campaign causing widespread famine in Gaza, passed with remarkable bipartisan speed. So, while families in America navigate bureaucratic hurdles for baby formula and groceries, legislators somehow conjured billions for foreign military endeavors. One might wonder if the urgency to feed vulnerable populations domestically rises to the same level as the perceived need to fund perpetual
conflict abroad. Apparently, the 'fiscal constraints' argument only applies when American children are hungry, not when tanks need refueling.
