Western Powers Condemn Israeli Settlements While Funding Them
Connect these dots: Nearly twenty Western governments recently issued a joint statement criticizing Israel's continued settlement expansion in the occupied West Bank. These nations, including the United States, France, Germany, and the United Kingdom, expressed concern over measures that they assert undermine peace and a two-state solution. This condemnation, though notable for its numerical
breadth, rings hollow when juxtaposed against the substantial diplomatic, economic, and military backing these same countries provide to Israel. For instance, the United States alone provides Israel with approximately $3.8 billion in military assistance annually, a figure codified in a 2016 memorandum of understanding. This aid, largely unrestricted, underwrites the very security apparatus that
facilitates and defends illegal settlement activity. The European Union, while often critical in rhetoric, maintains robust trade relations that integrate Israeli products, including those from settlements, into global markets. This creates an undeniable double standard, where verbal disapproval is overshadowed by material support. This pattern is not new. The international community, post-World
War II, established institutions purportedly devoted to international law, yet consistently applies these standards selectively. Consider the 1967 UN Security Council Resolution 242, which called for Israeli withdrawal from territories occupied in the Six-Day War. Despite dozens of subsequent resolutions reaffirming this principle, the occupation and settlement enterprise have only deepened. The
