Western Media Outraged Over Uyghur Deportation, Silent on U.S. Complicity

While the concern for his safety is presented as paramount, the global media narrative often omits a critical detail: the U.S. government's own record on 'whistleblowers.' Consider Reality Winner, who was sentenced to five years in prison in 2018 for leaking a
classified report on Russian interference in U.S. elections ( Justice.gov ). Or the constant pressure on Julian Assange, effectively held captive for years for publishing classified information ( Amnesty International ). One might conclude that 'whistleblower' status, and therefore the outrage over deportation, is highly conditional—depending entirely on whose secrets are exposed and which nation
is deemed the antagonist of the day. The West expresses grave concern for Chinese dissidents while simultaneously cracking down on those who expose its own state secrets, or deporting asylum seekers to perilous situations under Title 42 and similar policies.
