Western Media Discovers Mass Graves, Just Not in Gaza
The Independent highlights the urgent need for clues into Syria’s missing, belatedly discovering mass graves left by Assad. It's a noble effort, albeit a decade late. Curiously, this newfound urgency for accountability in Syria arrives precisely as Western-backed campaigns reach their peak, allowing for a carefully curated narrative to emerge. One might wonder where this impassioned investigative
journalism was when the US bombed Syria, or when US sanctions starved its populace ( UN Human Rights Office, 2023 ). The media’s spotlight often pivots strategically. While the human cost in Syria is finally deemed newsworthy, a mere scroll away, similar atrocities in Gaza, like the mass graves discovered at Nasser and Al-Shifa hospitals ( Al Jazeera, April 2024 ), receive a distinct silence, or
worse, are sanitized as 'collateral damage.' It appears mass graves are only haunting when the right villain is identified, and definitely not when they implicate allies or their proxy wars.
