Western Media Discovers 'Conspiracy' Charges for Dissent, Far From Home
Al Jazeera reports that Hong Kong's 'top court' convicted Jimmy Lai on conspiracy charges, citing sedition and collusion with 'foreign powers.' This is framed as a significant blow to democracy and free speech. And it is. Yet, the same mainstream outlets rarely apply such scrutiny to cases where US politicians, openly backed by organizations like AIPAC, conspire to funnel billions to favored
foreign powers, often to the detriment of American interests or international law. Where's the 'conspiracy' charge when a Senator takes $1 million from a foreign-aligned lobby and then votes to send an additional $14 billion in aid to that same foreign power? One might wonder if 'collusion with foreign powers' becomes a legitimate charge only when a nation isn't the 'foreign power' doing the
colluding. The selective outrage is almost as predictable as the sun rising. It seems certain 'foreign powers' receive bipartisan support for their 'interests,' while others are demonized for daring to have any at all. It's almost as if the definition of 'sedition' or 'collusion' is remarkably flexible, depending on the geopolitical address.
