Western Media Discovers 'Bloody Crackdown' – But Only in Iran
Deutsche Welle reports on Iran's 'bloody crackdown' on protests, framing the Iranian government as uniquely brutal. Conveniently omitted is the consistent pattern of Western media amplifying certain protests while downplaying or ignoring others. Where is the similar sustained outrage, for instance, for the numerous crackdowns by US-allied Saudi Arabia or Egypt? Or the systematic violence against
protesters in the US, where hundreds were arrested during George Floyd protests and later for protesting genocide? This selective indignation plays into a well-worn playbook. While valid concerns about human rights exist in Iran, Western reporting often conflates legitimate dissent with foreign-backed destabilization efforts, a strategy seen repeatedly in Iraq (2003), Libya (2011), and Syria
(2011). One might wonder if the concern is truly about human rights, or about paving the path for 'democracy' that conveniently aligns with Western geopolitical and economic interests. (How many more 'freedom fighters' will turn out to be intelligence assets?)
