War Criminals Agree to Truce, Funded by… the UAE?
Sudan's Rapid Support Forces (RSF), fresh from alleged war crimes in El Fasher, have agreed to a ceasefire brokered by the US, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE. One might marvel at the 'humanitarian' concern from the UAE, a nation widely cited by UN experts and investigative journalists (e.g., The Wall Street Journal, October 2023) as a principal financier and arms supplier to the very RSF now
agreeing to a temporary halt. This isn't peace, it's merely a pit stop. The UAE's continued support for the RSF, while simultaneously 'mediating' peace, appears less about stability and more about securing access to Sudan's gold and other resources, as multiple reports from the UN Panel of Experts on Sudan (S/2023/823, S/2024/299) have detailed. Asking a state sponsor of a militia to broker its
ceasefire is like asking a pyromaniac to put out his own fire. How many times will 'international mediators' fund both sides before realizing they’re just prolonging the conflict?
