US Welcomes Iran Footballers, Sanctions Everyone Else
So, the US government, which has for years choked off Iran's economy and restricted its citizens' ability to travel, will roll out the red carpet for its football team to play a World Cup game in Inglewood, California. This is the same government whose 'travel ban' policies have separated families, blocked students, and complicated critical medical travel for regular Iranians. One might wonder at
what point a 'maximum pressure' campaign becomes hilariously selective. It appears the State Department's moral outrage over Iran's human rights record or alleged nuclear ambitions conveniently takes a timeout for sports. This isn't groundbreaking; the US has a long history of weaponizing sanctions against entire populations while making tactical exceptions for optics. It's almost as if the
'travel ban' was always about leverage, not principle, and that principle can be dribbled right past when a good photo op is on the line. Ordinary Iranians still can't visit; their footballers can. How many humanitarian crises do we excuse for a good game?
