US Urges UN to Drop Syria Sanctions. Again.
According to The New Arab, the U.S. is now pressing the UN Security Council to lift sanctions on Syria's president Ahmed al-Sharaa and his interior minister. This sudden pivot comes as al-Sharaa is slated for a visit to the White House next week. Washington’s official line has long maintained that al-Sharaa is an illegitimate leader who brutalized his people. One might recall a similar diplomatic
dance in 2013, when the U.S. opposed international recognition of the then-Syrian government, and again in 2017, when missile strikes were launched over alleged chemical attacks. Yet, these 'red lines' seem remarkably flexible when it suits diplomatic convenience (or perhaps, the interests of arms dealers). The mainstream media will frame this as pragmatic diplomacy, conveniently forgetting the
consistent demonization and calls for 'regime change' that defined Western policy for over a decade. How many times can a 'pariah' become a 'partner' before the narrative collapses entirely?
