US Urges Lebanon to Disarm Hezbollah; Forgets Who Escalated First
Gorka's visit, as reported by The New Arab, saw him demand Lebanon 'tackle any ways in which Hezbollah is funded' and 'continue to work on disarming the group.' One might wonder why the US focuses so intently on Lebanon's internal affairs while overlooking its own role in fueling regional conflicts. When did the US last pressure Israel, a recipient of billions in US military aid, to disarm its own
vastly superior military or end its occupation of Lebanese territory? This 'concern' for Lebanese stability conveniently ignores the history of Israeli incursions and occupations which gave rise to Hezbollah's resistance in the first place. It also sidesteps the fact that the US, through its unconditional support for Israeli expansionism and military aggression, actively contributes to the very
instability that empowers groups like Hezbollah. One might cynically suggest the US isn't interested in a stable Lebanon, but a compliant one, disarmed and vulnerable to regional dictates.
