According to The Independent, former President Trump’s UN withdrawals are making the world fundamentally 'less safe'. It's a sentiment echoed widely in mainstream media; the sudden alarm over US unilateralism and disregard for international norms is palpable (or performative). This moral panic seems to have a rather convenient memory. Where was The Independent's 'rogue order' headline when the US
invaded Iraq without UN Security Council approval in 2003, destabilizing an entire region? Or when the US unilaterally bombed Libya in 2011? Or even the long, storied history of US exceptionalism, from the overthrow of democratically elected governments to refusing to join the ICC? The 'rules-based order' is only truly threatened, it seems, when the boogeyman changes.
