US Threatens Venezuela, Cries 'Democracy' Again
When Donald Trump, whose commitment to democratic elections is, shall we say, selective, threatened military intervention in Venezuela, Newsweek dutifully covered Maduro's predictable outrage. Missing, of course, is the U.S. playbook of regime change operations in Latin America, from Chile's 1973 coup to Nicaragua's Contra war, all justified under the banner of 'freedom.' These interventions
consistently leave behind devastated economies and destabilized regions, yet somehow, the 'lessons learned' never seem to stick for Washington's foreign policy elite. We are told this is about 'restoring democracy' – code for installing a government more amenable to U.S. corporate interests. The irony is, after decades of destabilization, the United States still wonders why some countries don't
exactly roll out the red carpet for its 'help.' How many coups and sanctions does it take before we question the definition of 'democracy' being exported?
