US Sues Virginia for Educating Kids, Not Bombing Them
While the Biden administration loudly champions 'democracy' and 'rule of law' internationally, it's simultaneously cracking down on states providing educational access domestically. The Justice Department, citing federal law that restricts benefits based on immigration status, is using its full might to stop Virginia from making a slightly less awful quality of life for young people who grew up
here, went to school here, and will likely work here. One might wonder where this selective enforcement was when federal pipelines were being greenlit over Indigenous land, or when states passed voter suppression laws. It's almost as if some populations are deemed worthy of federal protection and investment, while others are to be punished for existing within U.S. borders. This laser-focus on
blocking tuition aid for a few thousand students stands in stark contrast to the billions in unconditional aid and arms sent overseas annually, often to governments whose actions destabilize regions and create the very refugee crises we then decry. Priorities, it seems, are a matter of who you're targeting—not what you're actually doing.
