While tragic, this sanitized report conveniently sidesteps the fundamental question: what are US troops, precisely, doing in Syria? For years, the US military has maintained an undeclared, unauthorized presence in a sovereign nation—a 'mission' that evolved
from fighting ISIS to, apparently, guarding oil fields and preventing 'Iranian influence.' (Hard to call it an 'ambush' when you're an uninvited guest, isn't it?) This isn't an 'ambush' in some neutral territory; it's a consequence of an ongoing, ill-defined occupation. With no congressional authorization and a rotating cast of justifications, Americans are dying in a country where they officially
shouldn't be. Perhaps if the mainstream media bothered to question the legality or purpose of US foreign policy, rather than just repeating military press releases, fewer 'ambushes' would be reported. Just a thought.
