One doesn't need to dust off a file from the 1954 Guatemalan coup (Operation PBSUCCESS) or the 1973 Chilean coup to find examples. Even in Venezuela, the US supported the short-lived 2002 coup against Hugo Chávez, and later recognized Juan Guaidó as the country's legitimate
leader in 2019, despite Nicolás Maduro holding power. The US has openly engaged in 'regime change' rhetoric concerning Caracas for years, with sanctions aimed at destabilizing the government. So, is it 'accusation' or 'observation' when a country points to a consistent, documented foreign policy pattern over decades? It seems the only thing surprising here is that anyone is still surprised when
the US is linked to attempts at influencing foreign governments. Perhaps a 'war on drugs' cover story is just the latest, least imaginative rebranding of an old classic.
