US Senator Finds 'Evil Dictators' Only When US Doesn't Own Their Oil
In 2021, The Hill dutifully reported on Sen. Murphy's outrage over Venezuela’s Nicolas Maduro, lamenting that 'there are evil, brutal dictators all over the world.' This profound realization, however, seems to have a peculiar blind spot: It rarely extends to countries where the US has propped up tyrannical regimes, like Chile under Pinochet or, more recently, the Saudi monarchy. Funny how 'evil'
is so often defined by who controls the oil, isn't it? Murphy, who also sits on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, has a track record of supporting interventions that align with US geopolitical goals, often prioritizing 'stability' (read: US corporate access) over genuine democracy. The glaring hypocrisy is that America’s 'freedom agenda' frequently involves destabilizing countries precisely
to remove leaders deemed uncooperative, dictators or otherwise. It's almost as if the 'evil' is less about human rights and more about whose economic interests are being protected.
