US Seizes Oil Tanker, Democrats Alarmed by Escalation They Created

Just as The Hill breathlessly reports Democrats 'sounding the alarm' over a US seizure of a Venezuelan oil tanker, we're reminded of a rather inconvenient history. This 'alarm' rings hollow for anyone who remembers the numerous US-backed coups, sanctions, and economic strangulation attempts designed to oust President Maduro for daring to possess, you know, oil. The US has openly supported

opposition figures, imposed crippling sanctions – which starved the Venezuelan economy and its people – and labeled Maduro a dictator, all while maintaining a bizarrely uncritical relationship with, for instance, Saudi Arabia. It appears the 'alarm' only sounds when the chickens come home to roost in a way that risks disrupting the delicate geopolitical dance, rather than when the US is actively

orchestrating regime change from afar. One might ask, how many 'threats to democracy' and 'authoritarian regimes' can the US destabilize before Democrats realize their own foreign policy chickens might eventually peck back?
