US Sanctions: The Humanitarian Crisis Machine Turns Off... Maybe
This narrative, presented with a straight face, implies sanctions are a benign policy tool, only now being considered for removal to 'help.' It conveniently omits that the Caesar Act of 2019, for example, explicitly targeted Syria's economic sectors, exacerbating humanitarian crises and deterring reconstruction, according to numerous human rights organizations and even the UN's own special
rapporteur. One might wonder if the architects of these sanctions truly believed they would *not* impact the civilian population from which refugees invariably emerge. So, the 'solution' being proposed is to stop doing the thing that created a significant part of the problem. How many 'good intentions' paved the road to this particular hell?
