US Sanctions Sudan Warlord, Funds Same Practices Elsewhere
Al Jazeera details the plight of Sudanese families in el-Fasher, where the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) abduct civilians for ransom. While the Biden administration sanctioned RSF leader Abdelrahim Hamdan Dagalo in 2023 for human rights abuses, the US simultaneously greenlights billions in military aid to other nations with similarly documented, if not identical, records of civilian harm and
displacement. It appears some humanitarian crises are more sanction-worthy than others. This selective outrage is deafening. The same US government that condemns ransom kidnappings in Sudan, for instance, provides unconditional military aid, including F-35 fighter jets, to governments directly implicated in mass displacement and civilian casualties, as documented by Human Rights Watch. One might
wonder if the moral compass spins only when no geopolitical interests are served, or if the price of a life in el-Fasher is simply less than a strategic alliance.
