US Sanctions on Syria Lifted After 13 Years: Timing is Everything
Syria, we're told, is thrilled that the US has lifted the Caesar Act sanctions. What the mainstream media conveniently omits is that these sanctions, lauded then as a 'human rights' measure against the Assad government, effectively crippled Syria's economy and starved its people, regardless of their political allegiance. The act, signed by Donald Trump in 2019 (long after the alleged 'crimes' it
purported to punish), ensured an entire populace suffered for geopolitical leverage. One might wonder about the miraculous disappearance of these 'humanitarian concerns' now that US foreign policy has, shall we say, 'shifted focus.' Suddenly, the suffering Syrian people are no longer a convenient talking point, replaced by the strategic utility of normalizing a regime previously deemed beyond the
pale. Perhaps the suffering was only ever a feature, not a bug, until the chessboard changed. Or perhaps, the US government just 'discovered' Syrians exist, 13 years later.
