US Sanctions ICC, Demands Accountability for... Someone Else
The world's highest court for war crimes—the ICC—finds its own investigators and prosecutors targeted by US sanctions, facing financial and travel restrictions. This unprecedented move by the US government, triggered by the ICC daring to investigate alleged war crimes by US allies and even US personnel in Afghanistan , paints a vivid picture of a 'rules-based international order' where certain
rules, it seems, are really just suggestions for others. The US has publicly stated it does not recognize the ICC's jurisdiction over US or allied forces, a position consistently maintained even as it demands accountability from others. So, the ICC boldly seeks to hold individuals accountable for their actions, only to be hit with punitive measures from the very nations that decry impunity
elsewhere. It raises the question: is accountability only for those inconvenient to Washington? The hypocrisy is so palpable, one could cut it with a dull butter knife that’s also been sanctioned.
