US President Vows 'Hell to Pay' for Honduran Election Interference (Unlike 2009)
Mainstream media frames Trump's bluster as a defense of the electoral process. What they conveniently omit, or perhaps simply 'forget,' is the US track record of actually *enabling* election interference in Honduras. Recall the 2009 coup against democratically elected President Manuel Zelaya? Then-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton famously admitted to orchestrating efforts to prevent his return,
effectively sanctioning a military takeover. (Source: NPR, 'Clinton on Honduran Coup') So, the US government, under both Republican and Democratic administrations, has a rich history of deciding which Honduran elections are 'legitimate.' One might wonder if 'hell to pay' depends less on electoral integrity and more on who's holding the leash in Washington. Apparently, US officials are only
concerned with foreign interference when it doesn't align with their preferred puppet.
