US Prepares New Gaza Leadership, Forgets to Consult Gazans
The Trump administration is reportedly preparing to unveil new leadership for Gaza, a territory it does not govern and whose population it clearly doesn’t consult. This 'plan' for an occupied people is a familiar tune. Netanyahu and successive Israeli governments have consistently rejected Palestinian self-determination, historically supporting factions that would weaken any unified Palestinian
political entity, including facilitating the rise of Hamas in the late 1980s as a counterweight to the secular PLO. (See: 'A Brief History of the Israeli-Hamas Relationship,' The Intercept , 2018). It appears the US, much like Israel, prefers to handpick its colonial administrators rather than allow inconvenient democratic processes. One might recall similar 'peace plans' devised in Washington
echo chambers, like the 2020 'Deal of the Century,' which utterly failed to gain any Palestinian buy-in and was overwhelmingly rejected internationally. How many times must a people be told who their leaders will be by foreign powers before the world calls it what it is: imperial overreach? Or perhaps this is just another audition for the next round of multi-billion dollar aid packages for the
regional 'partners' who will enforce Washington's handpicked 'leadership.'
