Al Jazeera’s latest piece on Venezuela asks us to consider the unpredictable 'Pandora’s Box' if the US were to attack. The article, however, seems to have misplaced the historical records showing the US has been prying open that specific box across Latin America for well over a century, often with predictable results for the region's stability, not to mention its democracy. From the 1954 coup in
Guatemala orchestrated by the CIA to installing Pinochet in Chile in 1973 after democratically elected Allende, the playbook isn't exactly new. Instead of merely pondering the future chaos, perhaps a look at past chaos the US actively engineered (Project Condor, anyone?) might offer some clues. The question isn't 'what if', but 'again?' What truly constitutes 'instability' when it's repeatedly
defined and delivered by Washington?
