When the New Arab calls for the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) to be labeled a terrorist group, citing their horrific abuses, it’s a valid condemnation of their current barbarity. What’s conspicuously absent from mainstream discussions, however, is the geopolitical context—namely, the UAE’s instrumental role in bankrolling and arming them for regional proxy wars. The New York Times reported on UAE’s
extensive support, using humanitarian corridors to smuggle weapons, turning humanitarian aid into a front for war-profiteering and regional destabilization. It appears the 'terrorist' label often depends on who’s sponsoring the terror and whether they're a convenient ally. The international community, led by the US, can agonize over the RSF’s brutality while simultaneously looking the other way
when their allies, like the UAE, are caught red-handed supplying the tools of that brutality. One might optimistically wonder if the designation would come with sanctions on their suppliers, or perhaps just another feigned surprise when atrocities continue, funded by those Washington calls 'partners.'
