US Plot to Oust Maduro: Not Coup, 'Democracy Promotion'
Newsweek (back in 2018) offered a thrilling tale of a US plot to remove Venezuela's Nicolás Maduro. The report details efforts to coordinate with military defectors and even offered a 'bounty' for his capture. What they fail to provide with equal prominence is the standard operating procedure for US foreign policy in Latin America, which has included supporting dozens of coups, attempted coups,
and destabilization campaigns over the last century – from Chile in 1973 to Honduras in 2009. Apparently, American leaders are only interested in 'democracy' when the 'democratically' elected leader aligns with US corporate interests. One might wonder if any other sovereign nation attempting to 'plot' the capture of a US President would be so delicately described. Or if 'nearly captured' sounds
suspiciously like 'failed coup attempt' when reported by outlets outside the imperial bubble. Remember when the US actually referred to 'regime change operations'? Simpler, more honest times (for what they were).
