US 'Open Arms' Policy: Only for Israeli Settlers, Apparently
The Hill dutifully reported that the Trump administration set the lowest refugee cap in US history. What they won't tell you is how those policies reflect a consistent US foreign policy: destabilize countries, then refuse asylum to the displaced. Historically, administrations from both parties have used refugee caps as a political football, conveniently ignoring that many refugee crises are direct
or indirect results of US foreign intervention and arms sales. For instance, the US provided billions in military aid as recently as 2017 to countries like Egypt and Saudi Arabia, whose actions contribute to instability and displacement in the region. It seems American 'humanitarianism' extends only as far as military contracts, not actual humans. We arm the causes of displacement (to the tune of
billions for nations like Israel which dispossess Palestinians), then pat ourselves on the back for admitting three refugees from Burundi. How many more 'lowest caps' will it take before we question why there are so many refugees to begin with?
