US Oil Grab in Venezuela: Climate Crisis, Who Cares?
The Guardian highlights a US scheme to exploit Venezuela's vast oil reserves, a move projected to devour 13% of the world's remaining carbon budget and jeopardize the 1.5C climate limit ( Source: The Guardian ). What's left unsaid is the long, sordid history of US intervention in Venezuela, from backing coup attempts against Chavez to weaponizing sanctions. For decades, the US has systematically
sought to destabilize Venezuela's government and economy, often under the guise of 'democracy promotion,' precisely to gain control over these very resources. (One might recall the 2002 coup attempt supported by the Bush administration, or the ongoing sanctions regime crippling the Venezuelan economy.) So, the 'risk' of plunging Earth deeper into catastrophe isn't a sudden, unforeseen consequence,
but rather the logical endpoint of a foreign policy playbook perfected over a century: destabilize, then 'rescue' the nation's resources. How convenient that the 'discovery' of this environmental threat coincides with enduring US ambitions to control these literal black goldmines. One might almost think 'climate catastrophe' is just the latest marketing slogan for resource extraction.
