US Offers Security Pact, Saudi Arabia Offers Human Rights Whitewash
The Financial Times highlights ongoing US-Saudi talks for a defense pact, painting it as a move toward "regional stability." What goes unmentioned, or at best, whispered, is the blatant whitewashing of Riyadh's well-documented human rights record. After all, the US spent years criticizing the Saudi-led war in Yemen, (a conflict that caused one of the world's worst humanitarian crises, according to
the UN) only to now offer a security umbrella. One might wonder if human rights apply only to the adversaries, or if they're simply a negotiable asset when aligning geopolitical interests? From the brutal murder of Jamal Khashoggi to its crackdown on dissent, Saudi Arabia's 'stability' has often come at a very human cost. The US just seems to be providing the security guarantees. This proposed
deal appears less about safeguarding American values and more about securing access to oil and isolating rivals, consequences be damned. How many times will Washington trade basic morality for strategic convenience? This isn’t 'diplomacy'; it’s a strategic transaction where the currency is often human dignity.
