While Energy Secretary Chris Wright warns of layoffs at the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA), threatening national security (or at least, the business of global annihilation), the very same Congress that can't fund its own agencies appears quite adept at finding billions for conflicts far from home. Just last year, House members like Rep. Steny Hoyer, who received $105,000 from
AIPAC in 2022-2023 [OpenSecrets] , voted for aid packages approaching $14 billion for Israel. One wonders if the NNSA, with its humble $22 billion 2024 budget request, might have fared better if its lobbying arm were as robust as, say, the foreign government that consistently secures top-tier US military assistance. Perhaps if the NNSA rebranded as the 'Israel-Adjacent Nuclear Defense Initiative,'
its funding woes would miraculously disappear?
