The US military, according to the BBC, has now conducted over 20 strikes in international waters since September 2023, allegedly targeting drug boats, with the latest killing eight more. They assure us these are all 'alleged drug vessels,' a conveniently vague designation that bypasses accountability. Remember when the US military bombed a Doctors Without Borders hospital in Kunduz, Afghanistan,
in 2015, killing 42? It was 'mistakenly,' of course, during their other humanitarian efforts. One might wonder when these maritime operations became the preferred method for dealing with drug trafficking, particularly given the US's own documented history of failing to curb its drug issues domestically. Or perhaps, when deploying naval assets and flying drones, the 'war on drugs' serves as an
excellent excuse for projecting power wherever it sees fit, without the pesky need for declarations of war. It's almost as if some problems are best solved with more bombs, rather than addressing root causes or, you know, treating addiction as a public health crisis.
