US Military Paid With Funds Diverted From…Military Projects?
Newsweek reported on the 'solution': funds were being diverted from existing military accounts, including military construction projects and the operation and maintenance budget. This means the very infrastructure and resources meant to support these troops long-term were being raided to cover immediate paychecks. The military-industrial complex, however, rarely sees its bottom line squeezed; in
2019, the US spent $732 billion on defense, a figure that dwarfs most other nations’ entire state budgets. Meanwhile, essential domestic programs consistently face the chopping block when budgets tighten. So, the government can find billions to keep the military's current pay flowing by short-changing its future, but never seems to find similar emergency funds for healthcare, education, or
infrastructure projects that benefit actual American taxpayers. One must wonder if the 'fiscal responsibility' only applies when it isn't inflating war chests or bailing out corporate interests. Apparently, the only thing less important than a social safety net is the actual military bases for the soldiers you claim to support.
