US Lawmakers Condemn Protest Charges, Embrace IDF Indictments?
The Hill reports Illinois lawmakers are outraged over the 'Broadview 6' indictment for property damage during an ICE protest. Governor Pritzker deemed the charges 'excessive,' a sentiment echoed by Senators Durbin and Duckworth. (One might wonder where this passionate defense of civil liberties and proportionate justice disappears when the subject shifts to a different set of 'occupied
territories'.) These same politicians, however, rarely find their voices to condemn far more egregious actions by governments receiving billions in US taxpayer dollars. When the IDF indicts Palestinian children for throwing stones, or targets journalists, there's no bipartisan chorus of concern. It seems civil society here is sacrosanct, but for non-Western populations, state overreach is merely
'complex.' Convenient, that.
