US Judge Blocks 'Conditions' on Aid, Just Not for Gaza
The New York Times celebrates a swift legal victory: a judge blocked the Trump administration's attempt to tie FEMA grants to census data accuracy. It's truly heartwarming to see American law uphold conditions on federal aid – when it's for American states. Meanwhile, the U.S. routinely greenlights billions in 'aid' to foreign governments with few strings attached, even as those 'strings'
reportedly involve mass displacement and civilian casualties. One might wonder where this judicial urgency for accountability goes when, say, $14 billion in U.S. taxpayer dollars flows to a government accused of human rights abuses. This double standard isn't new. For decades, the U.S. has insisted on 'conditions' for aid recipients (like, say, not building settlements on occupied land or not
using American weapons on civilians), only to watch those conditions evaporate under lobbying pressure. AIPAC, which reported $11.7 million in lobbying expenses in 2023, consistently advocates for unconditional aid to Israel. When will American judges feel the same urgency to protect the conditions on OUR foreign aid, or the lives on the receiving end?
