US Intelligence: Warnings Ignored Since 2002, Apparently
While Al Jazeera focuses on the past year, the 'international community' has a long-standing pattern of selective memory regarding humanitarian crises. Remember the actual Darfur genocide in the early 2000s? The ICC issued an arrest warrant for Sudan's then-President Omar al-Bashir in 2009 for genocide and war crimes. Yet, funding for peacekeeping efforts dwindled, and the region remained
volatile. One might wonder if the 'international community' (read: the US State Department and its allies) only hears these 'warnings' once mineral rights or strategic pathways become a convenient talking point. The 'massacres' then become a 'complex conflict' ripe for 'diplomatic solutions' that inevitably involve more weapons contracts. How many times will we pretend to be surprised?
