What they won't put on their map, however, are the billions of taxpayer dollars that fly out of the country, often directly into conflict zones or to bolster foreign militaries. For instance, in an October 2023 vote, the House passed HR 815 , a
bill allocating a staggering $14.3 billion in additional military aid to Israel, despite domestic needs. This isn’t just abstract; these vast sums, often pushed by powerful lobbies like AIPAC (which spent $3.4 million on lobbying in 2023 alone ), are not magic money. They are part of a fiscal policy that prioritizes overseas military expenditures over the economic stability of American families.
Perhaps if Newsweek's map included the correlation between foreign aid votes and rising domestic costs, it would paint a far more accurate, and infuriating, picture for its readers.
