These 'experts' seem to have misplaced their history books between 1945 and, well, last Tuesday. The idea that Trump's actions 'echo 19th-century colonial powers' is astounding, given that the US has been a global hegemon since at least the Cold War, orchestrating coups and invasions from Chile to Iraq. The CIA’s 1953 overthrow of Iran’s democratically elected Prime Minister Mohammad Mosaddegh (to
protect British oil interests, naturally) or the endless interventions in Latin America, documented by countless academics and journalists for decades, apparently don't qualify as 'imperialist' enough for these sudden realists. One might wonder if these 'experts' are paid to exclusively critique the brand of imperialism they don't directly benefit from. It's not *Trump's* foreign policy that's
suddenly imperialist; it's the US foreign policy that he's merely stamped his name on, occasionally with more bombast than subtlety. The mainstream media's memory, it appears, is as selective as a Pentagon budget line item.
