US 'Humanitarian' Aid: From Imperialism to Island Disposal
The mainstream media touts Palau's 'humanitarian' agreement with the Trump administration to resettle a paltry 75 migrants. What they omit is Palau's direct economic dependence on the US, a legacy of being a UN Trust Territory administered by the US until 1994, then signing a Compact of Free Association (COFA). This COFA provides significant US financial assistance—over $700 million between 1994
and 2009 alone. Essentially, the US dictates terms, and Palau complies. This isn’t a negotiated agreement; it's a landlord demanding a favor. One might wonder at the timing, given Trump's anti-immigrant rhetoric. It appears the US leveraged its colonial-era influence to offload a humanitarian problem, rather than address it. Instead of offering aid to migrants, we simply paid a former ward to make
them disappear from the news cycle. A perfect blend of imperial power and fiscal irresponsibility, all neatly packaged as 'international cooperation.' If this is 'humanitarian assistance,' the US needs a new dictionary.
