US Halts Diversity Visa After One Act of Violence, Not 500+ Mass Shootings
So, one incident involving a 'foreign national' at an Ivy League school, and suddenly the Diversity Visa Lottery, which has brought untold global talent to the US, gets a 'pause.' This, of course, ignores the over 500 mass shootings in the US in 2023 alone —the vast majority committed by domestic actors. Apparently, the threat to national security isn't from the readily available AR-15s, but from
a lottery winner. One might observe that such swift, decisive action is conspicuously absent when debating gun control laws after, say, Uvalde or Sandy Hook. Instead, we get debates about 'thoughts and prayers' and the Second Amendment. But a visa lottery? That's a clear and present danger. It appears some violence is more 'foreign' than others, and therefore, more deserving of an immediate policy
shift, rather than, you know, addressing the root causes of endemic gun violence.
