US Government Discovers Indigenous People Are 'Aliens'
The mainstream reports frame this as an unfortunate federal overreach or a bureaucratic error. They conveniently gloss over the rather inconvenient historical context: the Oglala Sioux are, by any reasonable measure, indigenous to this land, predating any 'American' border. The continued application of 'immigration' laws to people whose ancestors never crossed a border—rather, the border crossed
them—reeks of a colonial amnesia perfected over centuries. One might wonder if ICE was simply confused, mistaking their ancestral claim for a novel concept of 'illegal' entry. Or perhaps, the US government occasionally needs to reassert its ownership of land it forcefully acquired, even if it means criminalizing the nation's original inhabitants.
