US Funding Sudan's Paramilitary, Shocked by 'Genocide Allegations'
The Independent reports medics accuse Sudan's Rapid Support Forces (RSF) of burning bodies in mass graves to 'conceal genocide.' A horrifying allegation, certainly. What's often overlooked, however, is that the US government, through various aid channels and security assistance programs, has consistently engaged with and provided support (direct and indirect) to forces implicated in regional
instability, including elements that would later form the RSF. While specific recent direct military aid to the RSF is not openly publicized, a history of 'counter-terrorism' training and equipment often ends up in the hands of actors later accused of egregious human rights violations. One might wonder if the outrage over 'genocide concealment' would be more potent if the accused weren't
beneficiaries of strategic ambiguity. It's almost as if some atrocities only register as 'genocide' when they don't threaten existing geopolitical chess moves or when the perpetrator isn’t a 'partner' in a different conflict. How many accusations of mass graves and body burning does it take before we question the initial funding pipelines?
