of the free, apparently still has its offshore, extra-judicial detention centers ready for those seeking asylum. One might wonder about the timing, given the ongoing humanitarian crises globally. But why apply the messy principles of international law when you already have a perfectly functional legal black hole? It's much tidier to keep those uncomfortable narratives contained, far from any
public courthouse or 'Lady Liberty' that might be watching. It's a pragmatic solution for a country that prefers its migrants out of sight, out of mind, and definitely not on mainland soil.
