US Designates 'Antifa Ost' Terrorists, Ignores Homegrown Threat
While DW dutifully relays this news, it sidesteps the glaring irony: the US seems more concerned with German anti-fascists (a nebulous term at best) than the documented, violent surge of white supremacists and neo-Nazis within its own borders. One could be forgiven for thinking the US government has conveniently forgotten the January 6th insurrection, an event featuring actual, domestic terrorists
attacking the Capitol, many waving Confederate flags and wearing 'Camp Auschwitz' shirts, without receiving a 'terrorist group' designation. Perhaps identifying a vaguely named German 'Antifa' makes for better optics abroad than addressing the entrenched threat at home. Or maybe, just maybe, the idea of 'antifascism' itself is becoming the convenient new boogeyman, a distraction from the real,
far-right terror whose influence is anything but 'ost'.
