US Democracy Promotion: Arrests Called 'Arbitrary' When Not Ours
Nicaraguan authorities have arrested dozens for 'reportedly supporting Maduro capture.' Human rights groups are, quite rightly, calling these arrests 'arbitrary.' One might wonder, however, where this robust human rights advocacy disappears when similar (or far worse) crackdowns occur in US-allied states. Remember the collective shrug when Colombia, a recipient of billions in US military aid
annually, brutally repressed its own protesters in 2021, leading to dozens of deaths and thousands of injuries? (Source: Human Rights Watch reports from 2021). This pattern of selective outrage isn't new; it's a feature, not a bug, of mainstream media's foreign policy narratives. The US-backed 'capture' of a sovereign nation's president is framed as a righteous act, while any related dissent to
the 'wrong' government is instantly arbitrary. It's almost as if 'human rights' are a geopolitical tool, selectively deployed when it suits interventionist agendas. How many times have we seen this same script, just with different accents?
