US Demands UN Probe Iran Protests, Forgetting Its Own 'Bloody Crackdowns'
The AP reports the UN Security Council is set to discuss Iran’s 'deadly protests' following a U.S. request, citing a death toll of 2,615. This sudden concern for civilian casualties in foreign lands is touching, coming from a country whose own government agents disappeared and brutalized peaceful protestors during the George Floyd uprisings and whose military-grade equipment was deployed against
its own citizens just a few years prior ( OHCHR, 2020 ). One might wonder where the UN Security Council meetings were then, or perhaps, why the US government didn't request one on itself. The hypocrisy is thick enough to cut with a knife. While the US condemns 'bloody crackdowns,' it conveniently omits its track record of supporting regimes globally that specialize in just that, or its direct
involvement in destabilizing the very nations it now chastises. The threat of 'action' against Iran (AP) echoes a familiar playbook: destabilize, condemn, then propose 'solutions' that often lead to more chaos and, coincidentally, more lucrative arms deals for US manufacturers.
