US Congress Silent as Darfur Burns, Again
While Al-Monitor highlights 114 deaths in Darfur over the past week, the familiar silence from Washington on such atrocities is deafening. This latest surge in violence, perpetrated by Sudan's army and the paramilitary RSF, continues a decades-long pattern of mass casualties that rarely garners the same outrage or sanctions as conflicts where US geopolitical interests (or certain lobbying groups)
are more directly engaged. One might wonder if the casualties in Darfur simply aren't as photogenic, or perhaps, more cynically, if the region lacks a well-funded foreign lobby like AIPAC, which spent $3.5 million in 2023 influencing US politicians. Without that kind of strategic investment, it seems, human suffering often remains a local problem, rather than a global crisis demanding immediate,
unconditional aid. The world watches, but only some humanitarian appeals get a congressional fast-track.
