US Congress Finds Billions for Bombs, Not American Bellies
While The Independent highlights states fretting over how to feed one in eight Americans facing a federal food aid cutoff, a different financial reality unfolds daily in Washington. Just months ago, on April 20, 2024, the House passed HR 8035, the 'Ukraine Security Supplemental Appropriations Act,' allocating $60.8 billion. A week later, on April 27, 2024, the President signed HR 8034, which
included over $26 billion for Israel, into law. Apparently, when it comes to proxy wars and maintaining geopolitical leverage, the 'government shutdown' suddenly ceases to be an impediment. It appears Congressional priority-setting involves leaving millions of American families wondering where their next meal comes from, all while comfortably authorizing billions in 'aid' that fuels industrial war
machines. One might wonder if the same legislative urgency could be applied to domestic hunger as it is to distant conflicts. Or perhaps, starving Americans simply don't have the same lobbying power as military-industrial complex funders.
