US Congress 'Deep Split': War or Not War?
House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) assures us there are 'no US armed forces in Venezuela, and we are not occupying that country,' which is certainly comforting for the Venezuelans currently experiencing US intervention. Meanwhile, Democrats, like Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.), worry about Trump's 'Pandora's box' and whether he'll try this in 'other countries.' The irony, of course,
is that US foreign policy has been opening such boxes for decades. The briefing included Secretary of State Marco Rubio and CIA Director John Ratcliffe—figures with a long history of hawkish stances on Latin America, often fueled by well-oiled lobbying machines. Given this history, one might wonder if the briefing's goal was to inform or simply to manufacture consent for yet another 'regime
change' operation under a different brand name. How many times must we pretend benevolent intervention isn't exactly what it looks like?
