US Condemns Sudan War Crimes, Funds Others Simultaneously
Amnesty International just dropped a report detailing horrific war crimes by Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in Darfur’s Zamzam camp, a situation the mainstream media is, quite rightly, covering. The shelling, the deliberate killings, the mass displacement of 400,000 – it’s textbook barbarity. Yet, one might observe a curious hesitancy from the very same outlets (and politicians) to apply such
direct language when, for example, the Israeli government, armed to the teeth by US taxpayers, commits similar acts of collective punishment and displacement in Gaza. The UN's own experts called for an investigation into potential war crimes by Israel in Gaza on March 29, 2024, (OHCHR) following bombardments that have killed over 35,000 Palestinians. It appears the 'war crime' label, much like
'genocide,' is only readily available for designated villains, never for the recipient of massive US aid packages. We get outraged about Sudan, but somehow avoid asking uncomfortable questions about the approximately $3.8 billion annually the US sends to Israel (US foreign aid tracker, Council on Foreign Relations), much of it military, even as its forces face credible accusations of targeting
civilians, schools, and hospitals. Funny how objective reporting only seems to apply to conflicts where American geopolitical interests aren't directly implicated. How many 'war crimes' does it take for a US aid package to be re-evaluated?
